CUC employees get pay raise

Two projects completed, one to start this spring

CORBIN — Employees of Corbin City Utilities will get a little bonus come the first of next month — in the form of a raise.

During Tuesday’s regular meeting of the Corbin City Utilities Commission (CUC), board members approved a 1.7 percent cost-of-living increase. General Manager Ron Herd said the increase was based on the Consumer Price Index for 2012, and would go into effect April 1.

The annual raise was discussed at last month’s session, with Herd noting at the time he would review proposals for the raises.

In other actions, one easement remains to be signed on the CUC’s KY 1232 Sewer Extension Project in Knox County. In his report to the board, Herd reported the project will be bid early this spring with the section affected by the easement bid as an additive alternate. To fund the project, a total of $1,297,119 in state and federal grants will be used.

Two other CUC projects are finished. The total cost of the Old Trickling Filter Mercury Removal Project at their Wastewater Treatment Plant came to $265,370.58, using CUC funds. The project’s contractor was paid $174,241.53 for the mercury abatement, while the consultant to the project was paid $91,129.05, which included initial site assessment, closure plan preparation, abatement project administration and inspection.

For several months, the CUC’s 2011 Sanitary Sewer Rehabilitation Project has been completed. So far, the contractor has been paid $1,329,691.24, with $69,983.75 being held in retainage. Herd said in his report the retainage is being held until the contractor furnishes post-construction videos of the project, and that the engineer has received some of them.

Meanwhile, personnel with the firm GRW, Inc. continue to work on engineering reports for the utility’s Wastewater Treatment Plant Flow Upgrade project.

  • Thank you to owners of repeater systems

When you hear people say “ham radio” or “amateur radio” what do you think of? Perhaps a licensed citizen band radio, or maybe you think about a radio the size of a window air conditioner.
