The downtown Corbin building that once housed Thomasville Furniture is getting a lot of “likes” on a social media site lately.
That’s because of “before and after” pictures of what the Main Street structure could look like after renovations to the building at the corner of 2nd and Main streets are completed.
It’s being shown on the Corbin Main Street Program’s Facebook page.
Main Street Corbin and the Greater Corbin Housing Authority are sharing the pictures to give people a vision of what’s to come when high-end apartments and attractive retain space become available after the project’s finished.
Last December, Greater Corbin Housing, Inc. bought the building, with the selling price not disclosed. The nonprofit organization was formed in 2005 by the Housing Authority of Corbin, with the goal of the group to develop affordable housing in the city.
The “before” picture on the top was taken when the former home furnishings store was closed and for sale. Below that, a computer-generated rendering of what the two-story building could appear like after the rehabilitation and makeovers give the structure a brighter and more handsome appeal.
The below picture shows the building being called “Corner Lofts.”
According to Main Street Corbin’s Facebook page, the property is being stabilized, thanks to the housing authority currently re-roofing the building. When that’s done, work will be done on the high-end apartments on the building’s upper level, along with the retail space that will be on the main level.
As of 3 p.m. Friday afternoon, the “before and after” pictures had received “likes” from 114 people.
“We’re really excited about the property, and that people are responding to the new look on our Facebook page. The dual emphasis on what the housing authority and Main Street Corbin are doing is high-end housing and retail for downtown. We’d love to have people living there in the loft living space on the upper floors, and the bottom floor has plenty of retail space for shops, a retail business or a restaurant,” Main Street Corbin director Andy Salmons said.
He added the short-term results of getting people excited about what could come to Main Street is a perfect fit for the future.
“It fits in with our long-term strategy of people going downtown to live and visit, as well as having long-term viable businesses in the city’s center,” Salmons pointed out.
Greater Corbin Housing also owns the former Corbin East School building at the corner of Master Street and Hamlin Avenue. Earlier this week, Housing Authority director and Greater Corbin Housing secretary Dora Mobley said the physical work on remodeling and upgrading the former school began after Thanksgiving.
Housing Partnership, Inc. of Louisville is partnering with the housing authority on the construction, with a total of $4.5 million in private money funding the work. When completed in the spring of 2014, the old school building will be called Greater Corbin Housing Apartments. They will contain 32 affordable housing units.
