Responding to 2012

1,486 calls last year for Corbin

CORBIN — By Jeff Noble, Staff Writer

For the Corbin Fire Department, the year 2012 was a busy one.

Fire Chief Barry McDonald tallied up the figures over the past 12 months, and the total came out to 1,486 responses by city fire and rescue crews.

Of that total, 521 of the calls — roughly a third of them — were medical responses.

“The past year was the busiest we’ve had in a while, and we did cover a lot of medical calls last year. Those calls ranged from responding to strokes, heart attacks, to unresponsive patients and broken legs. Anything an ambulance has been called on in Whitley County and Knox County here, the fire department’s been called on, if it’s an emergency,” McDonald said Monday.

The 521 medical responses were also the most responses Corbin fire crews made last year by far. Second was firefighters and rescuers going to school zones at 330, while responding to false alarms and alarm malfunctions at 125. Responding to injury accidents was fourth at 110, while special details and other responses tied for fifth place at 70 apiece.

McDonald pointed out the spike in both medical responses and going to school zones during the open and close of the school day.

“We started running medical calls last year, as well as go to school zones. In the case of the school zones, it gets our guys out in the public to help the community, and it shows the community we’re here to help.”

Doing inspections ranked sixth on the response list with 60 made in 2012. Three categories were tied for seventh place — non-injury accidents, burn permits and other fires. The CFD responded to 30 structure fires last year, which was in eighth place. That was followed in ninth place with 20 vehicle fires responded to.

In releasing the figures Monday, McDonald said not only was 2012 a busy year for the department, but it was also the first time reports on their responses were given out.

“We have a tally sheet on a monthly report that we’ve given both the City Commissioners and City Manager. We started that last January, and at the end of the year, we totaled them up and also presented them with the yearly report on our activities and responses.”
