Semi-truck slams into boulder on I-75

No one injured in Monday night crash

No one was injured Monday after a boulder plummeted from a hillside and landed in the middle of northbound I-75.

However, a tractor-trailer headed northbound slammed into the giant rock, sending debris all over the interstate, some of which hit at least one other vehicle. It all happened at the 24 mile marker near Corbin.

“It just came down,” said the truck’s driver, Harvinder Dhaliwal, of Canada, pointing to the dark mountain top. “It dropped right in front of the truck.”

Once he hit the rock, Dhaliwal did what he could to avoid other vehicles.

“He did a great job with that — he didn’t hit any other vehicles,” said Kentucky State Trooper Robert Massie, who assisted at the scene. Pushing the rock in front, the truck ended up in the median, tangled up in the guard wire along the southbound lanes.

The rock ended up just barely in the southbound roadway.

Diana White, of Corbin, was heading home from a trip to Knoxville, Tenn.

“All of a sudden, there was a big bang,” she said. “There was this brown stuff everywhere.”

Some of that hit White’s car.

“I went to spinning and hit the guardrail,” she said, adding she was not injured. “It just scared me.”

She saw the truck hit the rock.

“I was afraid something else was going to come after that rock rolled off the hill,” she said.

She said she had her seat belt on.

“I’m just lucky the 18-wheeler hit it instead of me,” White said.

Reports that other vehicles had been struck by debris were swirling around the crash site, but at press time that could not be confirmed. One vehicle in question had already left the scene.

Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officer Keegan Bray was also unclear if any other vehicles were involved, however, he added no one was injured in the crash. He is the lead investigator in this crash.

Assisting at the scene were members of the Oak Grove Volunteer Fire Department and Whitley County EMS.
