Area children shop with a Trooper

CORBIN — Lay Elementary student Ben Messer, 8, shops with Trooper First Class Dallas Eubanks, a special operations canine officer who is assigned to Kentucky State Police Post 10-Harlan, during Shop With a Trooper Tuesday at the Walmart store in Barbourville. The Harlan Post took 23 children from the Knox County Public Schools district shopping for coats, clothes and toys.

The Knox students are among 65 children the Harlan Post will help this year, which is a record number for the post, according to Public Affairs Officer Trooper Shane Jacobs.

Each child is given $120 to spend. It is the 10th year Eubanks has participated in the program and he said he has seen a boy who was wearing two left shoes, another who only wanted clothes and no toys, as well as a boy who only bought a couple outfits for himself and spent the rest of his money on toys for his sisters. “It’s humbling,” Eubanks said.
